More about surgical steel:
Thanks to its corrosion-resistance, tarnish-resistance, scratch-resistance, and being hypoallergenic, surgical steel is the most popular material used in making body jewellery.
Surgical steel refers to the stainless steel variety used often in biomedical applications, as well as body jewellery. Surgical steel is mainly different from stainless steel in that surgical steel has a higher degree of corrosion resistance compared to stainless steel, and it’s also costlier than stainless steel.
It should be noted, however, that surgical stainless steel/ surgical steel is an alloy made of diverse metals, one of which is nickel. While the nickel content in other grades of stainless steel is quite high, surgical steel has low levels of nickel, which means that it is unlikely to cause a reaction.
Body jewellery made of surgical steel is made of 316L and 316LVM stainless steel. Surgical steel is low-carbon surgical steel.
In as much as surgical steel is made of other metals like nickel which would otherwise cause allergies, the process that results in the formation of surgical steel is particular, and it prevents the release of nickel and other metals from the surgical steel material.
Therefore, individuals who, on occasion, react to stainless steel tend to react not with the surgical stainless steel material, but with the factors like the use of harsh cleaning materials or mechanical irritation.
